The Charter Township of Canton occupies a square of Wayne County in Michigan, and it had a population just under 100,000 people as of the 2020 census. It’s the second-most populated township after Clinton Townshhip and is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in both the state and the nation, coming in 29th in 2015.
Canton was created in 1834 under an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature, making it older than Michigan’s statehood. The name comes from the port and provincial capital in China that was historically called Canton but is now Guangzhou.
Canton may be small, but it has produced a number of notable athletes, including Olympic gold medalist swimmer Allison Schmitt, professional hockey players Paul Cotter, Alex Foster, Matt Roy, and Charles Williams.
